For more than a week, the Convoy of Hope US Disaster Response team has been on the ground ministering to hundreds affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California. Through their efforts an army of compassionate volunteers have been deployed to some of the hardest hit areas, bringing comfort, help and hope to those facing the aftermath of fire.

Volunteers and churches from all over California have joined together to help their neighbors to the south through Convoy of Hope by helping distribute 7 semi-truck loads containing 280,000 lbs. of product into fire-affected communities. Going door-to-door, volunteers distributed bags containing masks, gloves, trash bags, cleaning supplies and paper towels to help residents in the clean up and recovery process. Volunteers are also helping to hand out PowerAde and other beverages to residents doing clean up, and to those still in shelters. More than 700 families have been touched in a dozen different neighborhoods throughout the Spring Valley and Poway areas, including Rancho Bernardo, Ramona, Jamul, Fallbrook, and many more.

One volunteer from the San Francisco area named George said he had volunteered in other shelters during other disasters, and says volunteering his time with Convoy of Hope had an element that was different in that he was able to actually get out and help people. Another volunteer said that a lady hugged his neck in thankfulness saying, “One of the things that I have noticed is that the church is here, meeting our needs with supplies and care.”

More than 800 sq. miles have burned, and at its height, an excess of 300,000 homes were evacuated, displacing more than a million people.
