Zion Baptist reports that Mennonites are gearing up for Isaac. Have 25 volunteers coming to muck out. Not sure if this same address from Katrina will be in play for Isaac 9/12/12
Despite having a smaller crew this week, much was accomplished. The Ms. H house had all of the walls and ceilings covered with sheet rock plus one and a half coats of mud were applied. The Mrs. G house had most of the inside of the house covered with sheet rock, and mudding got off to a good start.
MDS completed renovations on the Hayne Blvd. building in early 2008 and all volunteers are housed there, in the northeast part of the city next to Lake Ponchartrain. Over 100 clean up and repair jobs have been completed as well as several new homes. Small groups continue the work over the summer and the project will open to larger groups in the fall and winter.
Volunteer Status: This project has temporarily relocated from Hayne Blvd. to the Gentilly Convent while renovations are being made. MDS continues to work in New Orleans from the convent & provides week long volunteer opportunities with free accomodations (donation appreciated "but never asked for") & meals. This site is booked for volunteer through May '08, but you can always check for cancellations.

Disaster Description
New Orleans was damaged not so much by the wind and rain of Hurricane Katrina, but by the failure of the levees surrounding the city to keep out the waters of adjacent Lake Pontchartrain. Much of the city was flooded and many homes still stand empty more than four years later.
MDS Response
MDS is repairing and rebuilding homes in various areas of New Orleans, including Gentilly, Lower 9th Ward and Upper 9th Ward. MDS partners with organizations such as Catholic Charities, Crescent Alliance Recovery Effort (CARE) and Greater New Orleans Disaster Recovery Partnership (GNODRP).

Volunteer Status: This site is currently scheduling volunteers
for the fall. A construction supervisor is needed for October
and December. Crew leaders are needed from October-December.
Skilled and long-term volunteers always needed
MDS is always looking for workers skilled in building trades,
site supervisors, project directors and cooking staff. If you
fit any of these categories, please register that you would be
availble to volunteer with MDS, if not immediately then perhaps
in the near future.
Please register your availability and interest with Cathie
Kearsley at ( 717) 859-2210 (for US inquiries) and Evelyn
Peters-Rojas at (866) 261-1274 (for Canadian inquiries).
MDS opens call center:
Volunteers with MDS can now call one toll-free number. Short-term
and all US volunteers will call 800-241-8111, to schedule time at
a project. Long-term volunteers in Canada will continue to call
866-261-1274. Previously volunteers needed to call each project
to schedule, and now should call just one number for all
volunteer information. ?We are hoping that by streamlining this
process, volunteers will find it easier and more efficient,?
stated Kevin King.

Hello Terra,
Mennonite Disaster Service provides week long volunteer opportunities.
MDS organizes work projects (clean-up, repair and rebuilding) for
volunteer groups. MDS provides housing and meals for all volunteers at
no cost. While we do have accommodations for volunteers in New
Orleans, the week of March 23-29 is already full. I am sorry that we
cannot accommodate your group at this time.
Blessings,
Sarah

“We are hoping that by streamlining this
process, volunteers will find it easier and more efficient,”
stated Kevin King.

New Orleans was damaged not so much by the wind and rain of
Hurricane Katrina, but by the failure of the levees surrounding
the city to keep out the waters of adjacent Lake Pontchartrain.
Much of the city is flooded and many homes still stand empty
over one year later. MDS will be repairing and rebuilding homes
in the Gentilly section of New Orleans and possibly surrounding
areas. MDS partners with several organizations, including
Catholic Charities, Crescent Alliance Recovery Effort (CARE) and
Greater New Orleans Disaster Recovery Partnership (GNODRP).
MDS has purchased a large building in New Orleans which we have
remodeled and will be housing the volunteers. All weekly volunteers
will be staying in bunk-rooms in the house. Meals will be on the
second floor of the house which is where the kitchen and dining
area are located. Bathroom facilities are located near the bunk-rooms
on the first floor. This facility does not have RV parking available.
There might be some rooms available for couples. The property is next
to the dam at Lake Pontchatrain.
