Habitat for Humanity/Metro Jackson Hancock Project promotes home ownership with volunteers building houses in partnership with Bay St. Louis/Waveland residents in need of adequate housing. Our Hancock County project is located approximately 50 miles east of New Orleans on the gulf coast.
As of 12/06, this group had built 50 homes in the gulf.
In Hancock County, members of our staff, AmeriCorps, and volunteers recently began building our 31st house! The start of this home marks the 14th house built in Waveland, with 14 also completed in Bay St. Louis, and three underway in Diamondhead. Truly incredible progress is being made everyday.
Operation Home Delivery is Habitat for Humanity International's response to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Habitat is concentrating its rebuilding efforts in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Over 400 new homes are complete or under construction on the Gulf Coast and Habitat
expects to build 1,000 homes.

cat_notes: Wendy inquired about the Lowe's deal. But then didn't follow through and get any additional info that I can tell. There was a family that asked about it, and she ended up referring them to Kim Cheeks at Volunteers of America. Wendy went on to say "someone in the group that is up to date on all the latest opportunities for home owners." Not sure if that's Habitat? or VoA, or who. But she didn't have any more info about Lowe's.

It said, "hope to build 1,000 homes by mid-2007", I took out the mid-2007, because I couldn't find anything on their site that talks to their having gotten anywhere close to that and 2007 is almost done.
