In light of the flood waters creeping closer by the hour, we've seen a lot of people packing up their trucks and vehicles in neighborhoods along the Mississippi River. Most are heading out to stay with friends and relatives.
But for some, it's not that easy.
"I got nowhere to go, I got to look for somewhere to go," says Elvis Kidd, Jr., whose house on Eva Street in Vicksburg will probably flood.
For cases like that, the Red Cross has opened up a shelter at Hawkins United Methodist Church on Halls Ferry Road in Vicksburg. There's also a Red Cross shelter in Tunica, which has been open since the tornadoes. Flood evacuees can eat, shower, and sleep at the shelters.
As of Friday morning, no one had registered to stay at the Vicksburg shelter. "We've had some people drop in to inquire. We had some folks, they were coming from Eagle Lake north of town," says shelter manager Bob Athow.
Forty eight cots are set up inside the recreation room. There is room for 125. Bring your own pillows and sheets if you can. If not they will be provided for you. Pets are not allowed at the Red Cross shelters.

name: SHELTER, Hawkins United Methodist Church (2008 RED CROSS EVACUTION SHELTER CLOSED) -> SHELTER, Hawkins United Methodist Church
notes: MS: central MS has 6 churches slated for shelters
Evacuees fleeing Hurricane Gustav will prompt shelters to open in
central Mississippi — possibly by Sunday— if local American Red Cross
officials receive the go-ahead from state and local government.
Volunteers with the organization will staff shelters beginning with
those in the northern part of the state, then stagger acceptance of
evacuees southward, Vicksburg Area Chapter executive director Beverly
Connelly said.
"We will follow the protocol of the state," Connelly said, confirming
six area churches will house Red Cross shelters once Warren County
Emergency Management receives directives from the Mississippi
Emergency Management Agency.
