Mission on the Bay is a Christian community of faith that
provides a welcome and hospitality to volunteers wishing
to serve in the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort. Mission
on the Bay operates recovery and reconstruction missions for
those in need on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Mission on the Bay welcomes volunteers and groups (of ANY
denomination) that have volunteers under the age 16. Just as
with Camp Coast Care there are construction projects; however,
we are currently concentrating on “de-mucking” and clean-up crews,
allowing our younger volunteers the ability to work in the
community with-out previous construction skills.
Please be advised that the recovery process has been approximated
to take a minimum of 10 years. Volunteer help will be needed for
years to come. We ask that you keep not only Mission on the Bay
in your thoughts and prayers but those in the community whom have
been given such inspiration from volunteers all across the globe.
*OUR NEW HOUSING FACILITIES ARE FULLY FUNCTIONAL*
The calling to volunteer is shared by many young adults. As a
Christian community we recognize the importance of mission work
at all ages.
Mission on the Bay volunteer work crews composed of all levels
of skill and ages are organized daily to go out into the communities
to help residents. The minimum age is 7th grade (in the 7th grade or
going into the 7th grade in the fall).
Mission on the Bay is proud to announce the two newly erected
housing units. Volunteers are now able to stay in military style
Quonset huts, sleeping in barrack style bunk beds. Both male and
female units are insulated as well as heated and cooled (there are
separate male and female sleeping buildings). Volunteers are also
provided separate, male and female, bathrooms (private showers,
toilets, and sinks). Three meals a day are provided to volunteers
as well as snack foods, bottled water, and beverages. We have a
suggested donation of $20 per volunteer per night. Please note,
not all groups are able to provide the suggested donation amount,
do not let this prohibit you from joining us.
Lutheran Episcopal Services of MS is the major funder (umbrella
organization) for Mission on the Bay. The local LTRC and City Team
Ministries through their casework send them community/neighbor projects
and they are also assisting their parishioners (many of whom are
still not back living in their homes because they are not habitable).
It is suggested that volunteer groups leaders contact their local
Lowe's Home Improvement retail store to arrange for their free
courses in construction and/or sheet rock instruction prior to
arriving for their volunteer groups. Most of the work will involve,
gardening, yard clean up, landscaping, sheet rock installation and
painting.
The best kind of donations to forward this recovery would be Lowe's
gift cards (first) and Home Depot (second). Monetary donations are
welcomed and needed. This site doesn't have storage facilities for
bulks of building materials so gift cards are put to best use project
by project.
The will also house adult volunteers and their greatest needs in this order
are: Skilled, Electricians, Plumbers & Carpenters.
Materials/Supplies Needs are:
Power Tools
Lawnmowers/Lawn Equipment
Weed Eaters
Chain Saws
Butch advised that committee's are now in session with their
parishioners and Architects to move forward with the rebuilding
of Christ Episcopal Church. They are also in the process of
securing a permanent building to be put on the site for site
administration of the church and volunteer camp.
This is truly a WONDERFUL volunteer opportunity and experience
for youth (and/or any aged volunteer) and being located right
on the beach offers recreation when volunteer projects are
completed.

to serve in the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort. Mission
on the Bay operates recovery and reconstruction missions for
those in need on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Lutheran Episcopal Services of MS is the major funder (umbrella
organization) for Mission on the Bay
This is truly a WONDERFUL volunteer opportunity and experience
for youth (and/or any aged volunteer) and being located right
on the beach offers recreation when volunteer projects are
completed.
