Governor Haley Barbour has declared a State of Emergency for the entire state, and President Barack Obama issued a federal disaster declaration for seven counties. MCVS is coordinating with the Mississippi Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (MSVOAD) to assemble disaster crews and respond to areas in need. Nine Volunteer Reception Centers have served affected communities since the deadly storms. MCVS has documented 3,588 volunteers serving over 13,159 hours since Friday, and is awaiting additional reports of volunteer response activity from several other counties.

The Pascagoula River Audubon Center will organize training on cleaning wildlife affected by the oil spill. Volunteers may register their contact information at the center’s website.
Volunteer community safety and health training for cleanup efforts related to the oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are now scheduled to be conducted by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Pearl River Community College at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday at the following locations:
MGCCC Jackson County Campus Gymnasium
MGCCC Jefferson Davis Campus Room U202
PRCC Hancock County Center (Not available Saturday)
These volunteer training sessions will qualify volunteers to participate in pre-landfall beach cleaning to minimize impact on the beaches of any oil contamination of trash and debris on the beaches. It will not qualify the volunteers to do cleanup of oil contaminated beaches and wildlife.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency call center can answer questions from concerned residents regarding the oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. The number is 866-920-MEMA (6362).

OILSPILL HELP NEEDED:
The Pascagoula River Audubon Center will organize training on cleaning wildlife affected by the oil spill. Volunteers may register their contact information at the center’s website.
Volunteer community safety and health training for cleanup efforts related to the oil spill in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are now scheduled to be conducted by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Pearl River Community College at 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday at the following locations:
MGCCC Jackson County Campus Gymnasium
MGCCC Jefferson Davis Campus Room U202
PRCC Hancock County Center (Not available Saturday)
These volunteer training sessions will qualify volunteers to participate in pre-landfall beach cleaning to minimize impact on the beaches of any oil contamination of trash and debris on the beaches. It will not qualify the volunteers to do cleanup of oil contaminated beaches and wildlife.
