Vietnamese Americans Speak About BP Oil Spill Disaster

Regional Gulf Coast Press Conference by Vietnamese Americans to Speak on the BP Oil Spill Disaster

Biloxi, MS—Vietnamese-American communities across the Gulf Coast will host a press conference to demonstrate the regional impact the BP Oil Disaster has on livelihoods, the family and the community. The regional group challenges community leaders, BP, state and federal governments to urgent and collaborative action. We are raising these issues in the hopes that President Obama hears our pressing needs as he tours Mississippi, Alabama and Florida for the first time after the Oil Spill Disaster.

Today, one third of all commercial seafood workers in the Gulf Coast are Vietnamese American. In the Gulf, at least 80% of the Southeast Asian community depends on the seafood industry. Most can no longer work due to current Federal water closures. For nearly 30 years,
Gulf Coast Vietnamese Americans have thrived as commercial fishermen harvesting shrimp, crabs and oysters and processing seafood. The fishing industry was a natural appeal for many Vietnamese refugees arriving in the US in the mid 1970s since these jobs did not require English proficiency. It also became a pathway to realize the American dream by becoming successful entrepreneurs of the sea. Now, the entire seafood industry and this American dream is ruined indefinitely.

Gulf Coast Vietnamese Americans propose the following solutions:

1) long-term jobs created to replace destroyed livelihoods
(2) BP and government agencies communicate information on the oil spill clearly to the community
(3) financial institutions grant fisherfolk loan deferments and cancel interest rates
(4) immediate and temporary provision of financial assistance
(5) comprehensive and full healthcare coverage resulting from the oil spill clean up work
(6) establish legal protection for fisherfolk from lawyers who are preying on them to profit off of vulnerable populations

“I can’t work anymore,” said Tony Quang Nguyen, a commercial shrimper in Mississippi for 30 years. “I don’t know English, so the information being given us isn’t clear. I have no way of checking to see if BP will really follow through or not.”

The conference is organized by the South Bay Alliance of Alabama, Mississippi Coalition for Vietnamese American Fisherfolk and Families, the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation and Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans.
