Cholera Epidemic
October 28, 2010
Most of you have heard by now about the cholera epidemic taking place in Haiti right now. The story first hit the news last Thursday when it was reported that 135 people had died. The number of deaths is now at almost 300.
Cholera is a bacterial infection of the small intestine that causes profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting and abdominal pain that can lead to rapid dehydration and death within a matter of hours if left untreated. The primary treatment is to give rehydration fluid orally or, if need be, intravenously. Antibiotics can shorten the duration of the illness and reduce fluid loss. It is transmitted through contaminated drinking water or food. Cholera has not been seen in Haiti for 50 years.
If you look at news reports today there are conflicting opinions on whether the epidemic is slowing down or just getting started, whether it’s spreading or being contained. Whatever the case may be, we wanted to let you know how Haitian Christian Mission is being affected and how we are responding.
The epidemic began in the Artibonite Region about 60 miles north of Port-au-Prince. HCM has a church and school in La Croix Perisse, a village southeast of Gonaives and in the affected region. So far 35 people have died in La Croix, eight of whom were members of the HCM church. It has been reported to us that a thousand people are infected in that small village.
Fond Parisien is located several hours drive away from the center of the epidemic, but four suspected cases of cholera have been seen in the clinic. Betty Prophete and our Haitian physicians are doing all they can to prepare for a possible influx of patients with cholera in the Fond Parisien area. Dr. Patrick attended a meeting at the Ministry of Health today and is hoping to get medication from the Haitian government. Betty has been buying supplies in Port-au-Prince and has a tent prepared for quarantine. As is often the case with Betty, she is very busy but is staying positive and hopeful.
At the HCM schools and churches, teachers and preachers are educating the people in their communities about the disease and prevention. Preachers are also coming to Fond Parisien to get water purification tablets to distribute.
During the last two weeks teams from FAME have been staying busy in Fond Parisien and in mobile clinics. They are seeing a number of emergency cases. Future mission trips to Haiti are not being cancelled but those traveling to Haiti are advised to visit the CDC site.
We ask that you join us in praying for the people of Haiti and for those caring for the sick.

Christ For All Health Center
The HCM clinic, Christ For All Health Center, serves a population of 80,000 people who have very few other options for healthcare. The center, staffed with Haitian physicians, nurses, assistants and lab technicians operates a day clinic Monday through Friday. It remains open 24 hours a day to provide inpatient care and emergency services. A fully stocked pharmacy and a lab allow patients to get much of what they need all in one place. The clinic is frequented by visiting medical teams that at times provide more specialized care.
Formosa Obstetrics and Gynecology Center
The OB/GYN center, located next to the health center, was built in 2008 as a cooperative effort with Project Haiti Heart and the Taiwanese government. It contains a delivery room, consultation room, operating room, ten-bed patient room, sterlization room, storage space, bathrooms and showers. It was built so that C-sections and other life-saving surgeries could be performed on site rather than having to send patients to Port-au-Prince. While we do not yet have a Haitian physician who can perform these surgeries, visiting American surgicial teams have been able to use the facility to perform a variety of surgeries. What an incredible thing it is to now have one of the best operating rooms around stocked with all the necesary equipment and supplies! Haitian midwives and doctors deliver many babies in that building as well.
Mobile Clinics
When medical teams visit HCM they often hold mobile clinics in the various HCM churches through the countryside. The patients they see have no other healthcare available to them in their area. The teams take all their medication with them and often prepare to treat dozens of children for worms and scabies among other things. What a wonderful way to show the people of Haiti’s far flung villages that we have not forgotten about them and we care about their wellbeing! Often teams take along bags of rice and other donations to give to the people.
The Future
Many of the dreams we have had regarding our medical work are now a reality thanks to the help and generosity of many individuals and organizations. We therefore have no reason to stop dreaming big. We are currently making plans to build a hospital on land we have purchased in Fond Parisien. Emergency services are a huge need there as we are located along a busy highway so we want to enhance our ability to meet those needs. We also want to be able to host more specialized foreign physicians and care for more sick patients. To meet another need that Haiti has, we also hope to incorporate a medical school in the facility.

MISSION TRIPS:
About the Trips:
Taking a trip to Haiti is often a life-changing epxerience. The people that HCM ministers to are always blessed when we have mission teams visit us, but at the same time the team members end up reaping as much benefit from the experience as those they go to serve. The HCM guesthouse in Fond Parisien is a busy and exciting place to be and we welcome teams that are ready to work hard and share Christ’s love with the Haitian people to come alongside us and help.
Mission Trip Basics:
The town of Fond Parisien is located about 45 minutes east the Port-au-Prince airport. It is there that the HCM guesthouse, the Plunkett House, is located. The living quarters are located above the mission clinic and can accomodate about 35 people at one time. The trip fees cover housing, all meals, transportation in Haiti, and interpreters.
Medical Mission Teams:
Teams made up of medical professionals can serve in the HCM clinic and hospital in Fond Parisien and can travel out to hold mobile clinics. We have been visited by family physicians, various specialists, surgeons, dentists and optometrists. Teams normally include enough support personnel to man the triage stations and pharmacy.
Construction Teams:
We have had teams help build homes, benches, mission buildings and more. Often the team works alongside Haitian workers.
Evangelistic Teams
Teams of all ages and sizes come to hold Vacation Bible Schools and seminars and to preach and teach in our churches and schools.
Trip Cost:
6 day trip = $350 plus airfare
10 day trip = $470 plus airfare
These fees cover the cost of all lodging, meals and transportation in Haiti as well as the costs for generator fuel and interpreters.

Partnered with Project Haiti Heart to add an OB-GYN facility next to hospital -> Christ For All Health Center
