What is Islamic Relief?
Islamic Relief (IR) is an international relief and development charity which envisages a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. We are an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) founded in the UK in 1984 by Dr Hany El Banna.
What does Islamic Relief do?
Working in over 25 countries, we promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and disease. We also respond to disasters and emergencies, helping people in crisis.
Islamic Relief provides support regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender and without expecting anything in return.

Islamic Relief teams up with local NGO to help the people of Japan

Islamic Relief has teamed up with a Japanese NGO in to get help to vulnerable people struggling in the aftermath of an earthquake and devastating tsunami.
The full scale of the disaster is now starting to emerge, following a devastating tsunami which swept the north-east of Japan after a massive earthquake struck just off the coast. The tidal waters swept away homes, livelihoods and infrastructure, and a nuclear emergency has been declared with explosions at least one power station. More than 200,000 people were evacuated from the area, and 300,000 people had to flee their homes across the country. Immediate humanitarian needs are water, food, and blankets.
Since the earthquake on 11 March, the current confirmed death-toll has risen to 9,000. More than 12,500 people are still missing. With damage to road networks and transport infrastructure, movement around the country is still severely restricted. Japanese people also face the threat of further earthquakes and fears over radiation released by damaged nuclear-power stations.
Islamic Relief is now working with a Japanese NGO to get vital aid and humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people. The charity, which is called JEN, has worked with Islamic Relief in Pakistan and Iran and has extensive experience in emergency response. JEN has distributed cooked food, hygeine kits, food staples and water tanks to 12,000 people at Takasago school - currently used as an evacuation centre - and is also identifying the needs of evacuees in the districts of Aoba, Wakabayashi, and Miyagino.
