NOTE: Given the COVID-19 pandemic, MDS has put into place some requirements for how projects will operate in the coming months. These include some additional health & safety practices to ensure the health & safety of our volunteers, clients, and community partners. The specific practices will be put into place at each project and may be updated as recommendations and regulations change. Due to the closure of the U.S./Canadian border, the Canadian government travel advisory against travel to the U.S., and uncertainty about insurance coverage for COVID-19-related medical costs, MDS Canada is currently not sending or supporting volunteers serving in the U.S. We continue to evaluate this situation and look forward to the day when Canadians can again serve on U.S. projects.
We are forming a list of skilled volunteers interested in serving in American Samoa. For more information, check our website or call (800) 241-8111.
Remember the variety of ways you can give to MDS – volunteer your time, give money through cash donations, planned gifts, bequests and traded securities. Call our office to learn more details.
This week we again started with a number of days of very serious rains! We dash from shelter to vehicle to stay somewhat dry. This week we started at Veli’s home. The family had helped us by moving their belongings into an attached “lean”. We were able to replace the roof with only a five-minute rain.
A Project Director and an Office Manager are needed from Mar. 4 to Mar. 20 in Diamond, LA. Office Managers are responsible for bookkeeping and general office duties and Project Directors are responsible for the leadership of the project. If you are interested, please call (800) 241-8111 in the US or (866) 261-1274 in Canada.

Mr. Chris’s house was put on hold until Thursday, waiting for approval to repair more than was originally scheduled. When we began working on the house we found much more damage than met the eye at first glance. As soon as we were granted approval, Jim and Pete began to pull out the bottom half of the drywall to rid the house of mold and also allow for rewiring.

We dedicated Miss Rose Marie’s house on Tuesday. Several of her siblings, children, grandchildren, and neighbors showed up for the celebration. Several of our volunteers took part in presenting Miss Rose Marie with a Bible, a wall-hanging, a house key, and an occupancy permit. Tears filled her eyes as she thanked everyone involved in completing her home. She is very excited to be able to “come back home”.

This is the MDS Update for September 2020
Early Response to Hurricane Laura
Project Director and two supporting Leadership Volunteers throughout the fall 2020 months. Specific dates, duties, and location are still developing.
We expect to begin scheduling Leadership Volunteers from our winter 2021 waitlist beginning in early October.
https://mds.mennonite.net/mds-response-to-hurricane-laura/
We continue to evaluate this situation and look forward to the day when Canadians can again serve on U.S. projects.

The family for our fourth house could not hide their excitement as they saw the frame of their house take shape on their concrete piers. In addition to the physical changes on the houses, volunteers hoped their week of service provided some confirmation to the people of Cameron that God and God's people care about them

Mr. Chris’s house was put on hold until Thursday, waiting for approval to repair more than was originally scheduled.
