Voices of Hope - Crisis Response Team Updates.
As Hurricane Gustav continues its track inland, the Disaster Relief ministry is in full swing. From the Mississippi Conference headquarters to district offices to local churches to neighborhoods across the state, the remnants of Gustav are alive and well. Bad weather is predicted to impact much of the state through Wednesday night.
Churches and pastors are calling into the conference office to report their status. Our district coordinators are working to assess the damages in their areas. By most reports, the damages are much more limited than they could have been. By Thursday, we will have some more boots on the ground and continue with how we are responding.
We are also working with our brothers and sisters in Louisiana as they assess and share needs. We are looking for folks to receive ERT training who may be requested for help in those areas hit hardest. We will make that information available as we receive it.
The call center is housed at the conference office: 601-354-0515 or 866-647-7486.
Contact: Brenda Hiatt at Brenda Hiatt at bhiatt@comast.net or 601-917-7094.
Thank you for your gracious spirit and loving care.
Camp Gulfside is located on the grounds of what was Gulfside Assembly, one of our two United Methodist retreat centers on the Mississippi Coast. Established in 1923 by Bishop Robert E. Jones, the first black bishop to serve as a general superintendent of the Methodist Episcopal Church, it is a site of approximately 70 acres right on the Gulf. In 1980, Gulfside was dedicated as the 97th historical site of The United Methodist Church. Unfortunately, Katrina completely devastated this once-beautiful facility, and now plans are being made to rebuild, though it will be some time in the future.
Camp Gulfside is a 6,000 sq ft modular structure with multiple rooms, each holding 2 – 4 sets of bunk beds. There are no coed rooms. Volunteers will need to bring basic bed linens or sleeping bag and pillows. There are showers and restrooms onsite. Volunteers will want to bring towels and toiletries that they will use on their trip. There is a fully equipped kitchen, large dining area, and small lounge. The site has space for fellowship, along with Wireless internet access available nights and weekends.
There is a kitchen and dining hall at Camp Gulfside for teams to prepare meals during the week. The Site Coordinator provides a stocked pantry and will help teams in meal planning. Teams will designate persons from their group to prepare meals.
Teams at Camp Gulfside can do much good in the communities of Pearlington, Waveland, Bay St. Louis, and all over Hancock County.

Updates from the DRC
The call center has been actively scheduling individuals and teams to help clean up homes and churches in the areas most affected by the disaster. As of August 15, the center has registered more than 25,000 volunteers to work on the coast, cleaning up homes and creating safe and sanitary living conditions.
Volunteers fill a variety of roles, including coordination, clerical, general labor, clean up, and more. As Mississippi's recovery process continues, we will have volunteers serving in many specialized roles as well, such as electrical, plumbing, roofing, counseling, children ministries, and so on. We will have
need for persons with all types of skill levels, and welcome all volunteers.
Up to now volunteers have been housed in one of our many United Methodist churches on the coast. However, we are beginning to transition to new host sites constructed for long-term volunteer housing as well as early response in future storms.

Camp Gulfside is located on the grounds of what was Gulfside Assembly, one of our two United Methodist retreat centers on the Mississippi Coast. Established
in 1923 by Bishop Robert E.
Our modular building at Gulfside has sleeping rooms equipped with bunk beds, a fully equipped kitchen, large dining area, lounge, and restrooms. The site
also has a shower building and tool storage.
Teams at Camp Gulfside can do much good in the communities of Pearlington, Waveland, Bay St. Louis, and all over Hancock county.

currently have nearly 8000 volunteers coming to help between
March 1st and July 31st, and we feel that it will take our
best efforts to process and plan enough work for these who
have already scheduled. We are so very grateful for this
outpouring of compassion, and hope that you will consider
scheduling during the fall months, when we have ample space
and work. - Chris Bowers

Our call center is located in Meridian and serves as the
point of contact for churches, teams, and individuals
wishing to come and work in Mississippi, make donations
to our disaster relief, or simply get up-to-date information
regarding the recovery process. Our primary focus is the
scheduling of teams and individuals who wish to come and
serve in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina.
In the call center volunteers diligently serve as operators,
assisting in any way they can with information. We are open
five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Updates from the DRC
The call center has been actively scheduling individuals and
teams to help clean up homes and churches in the areas most
affected by the disaster. As of August 15, the center has
registered more than 25,000 volunteers to work on the coast,
cleaning up homes and creating safe and sanitary living conditions.
Volunteers fill a variety of roles, including coordination,
clerical, general labor, clean up, and more. As Mississippi’s
recovery process continues, we will have volunteers serving in
many specialized roles as well, such as electrical, plumbing,
roofing, counseling, children ministries, and so on. We will have
need for persons with all types of skill levels, and welcome all volunteers.
Up to now volunteers have been housed in one of our many United
Methodist churches on the coast. However, we are beginning to
transition to new host sites constructed for long-term volunteer
housing as well as early response in future storms.
Volunteer Camp Sites include:
Camp Gulfside ~ Waveland, MS
Camp St. Paul ~ Ocean Springs, MS
Camp Love ~ Biloxi, MS
Camp Hope ~ Vancleave, MS
CAMP GULFSIDE DETAILS:

Gulfside Assembly, one of our two United Methodist
retreat centers on the Mississippi Coast. Established
in 1923 by Bishop Robert E. Jones, the first black
bishop to serve as a general superintendent of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, it is a site of
approximately 70 acres right on the Gulf. In 1980,
Gulfside was dedicated as the 97th historical site
of The United Methodist Church.
Unfortunately, Katrina completely devastated this
once-beautiful facility, and now plans are being
made to rebuild, though it will be some time in
the future.
Our modular building at Gulfside has sleeping rooms
equipped with bunk beds, a fully equipped kitchen,
large dining area, lounge, and restrooms. The site
also has a shower building and tool storage.
Teams at Camp Gulfside can do much good in the
communities of Pearlington, Waveland, Bay St. Louis,
and all over Hancock county.

~Tools can be checked out but skilled trades volunteers
are encouraged to bring their own (at your own risk)
~Some gutting still happening - Mostly repairs/rebuilding
projects
~Large groups of volunteers must provide two cook volunteers
and everyone is responsible for cleaning up after themselves
and assisting in maintaining the camp as part of their service
~There is no fee to stay at Camp Gulfside but it costs $10.00/day
to feed each volunteer 3 meals and cover utilities so DONATIONS
ARE WELCOME
~Residents seeking assistance have case management assessment for
needs and assistance in matching them with resources/advocacy
and project assessment for repairs/rebuilding
