Volunteer Opportunities

Running a successful food bank is all about having the right Foods, Funds and Volunteers. Volunteering is such an integral part of the success of the Foodbank. It's a great way to get involved in your community and help out those that are less fortunate. For the fiscal year 2008-2009, a total of 57,128 hours were volunteered to support the Foodbank. These hours were a result of individuals volunteering at the Foodbank facility, special food and fund drive events, and distribution sites to fight hunger. Because of volunteers, we are able to provide additional resources to help fight hunger in our community.

Volunteering is great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, and make a difference in someone's life, and yours. The following volunteer opportunities are available:

Special Event:
Harvest Faire - Three Days of Medieval Merriment family fun, camping, and autumn splendor. Harvest Faire is a modern interpretation of a late 15th Century European fall harvest celebration and tournament.
October 8, 9, 10
Mariners Museum (Williams Field) Warwick Blvd, Newport News
October 8th: 5pm until 11pm
October 9th: 8am until 11pm
October 10th: 8am until 11pm
Need volunteers to help with event parking. Shifts are in 3 hour increments.

Warehouse Volunteers: [Limited summer opportunities]
Warehouse facility Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., Wednesdays 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.:

sort and clean canned goods
off load trucks
package food for the Backpack and USDA programs
make sandwiches for the Kids Cafe
assist agency members load cars with food items
help food donors transport their donations
clean the warehouse
and more...

Backpack Program - Through partnerships with 16 Title 1 elementary schools, the Backpack program is offered weekly throughout the school year. Volunteers are needed to fill donated backpacks with nutritional foods that are easy to prepare that children take home to have food over the weekend. Starting September 20th, Backpacks are filled Monday - Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. This is a great team building project for groups, organizations, and individuals wanting to help out. Volunteering from Home:
If you don't have time to physically come to the Foodbank or help at special events, how about volunteering with just a "click of the mouse."

-September is Hunger Action Month. Take action to help fight hunger in our community by taking the pledge at www.hungeractionmonth.org. It only takes seconds to make a difference. The Foodbank with the most pledges based on population percentages, will win a truck load of food. So please, take the pledge and ask your friends, and family to join the cause.

-Food Lion gives back. By linking your MVP card to your favorite charity of choice, and then every time you shop and present your MVP card, the amount you spend on qualified items is automatically credited to the charity. Youth Groups: Youth groups are welcomed with one adult chaperone required for every two children ages 6-10; six children ages 11-13; and 10 children ages 14-17.

An adult must accompany children 14 and younger at all times. Youth 15 and older are welcome to offer their services on their own.
