Shelter, Emergency Shelter, Youth Focused available at Mississippi Children's Home Services

Diagnostic and Evaluation Shelters provide 24 hour emergency shelter for children who are abused, neglected, runaway or homeless. The programs offer a safe, caring environment where the children receive shelter, meals and snacks, clothing, counseling, case management, recreation, medical services, dental services, psychological evaluations, and transportation to school and appointments for up to 45 days while the children await their permanent placements. During a shelter stay the staff works to gather pertinent information regarding a child so that the social worker will have what is needed to make an appropriate placement decision.

Warren County Children's Shelter

Who We Are...
The Warren County Children’s Shelter is a 24 hour emergency shelter for abused, neglected, runaway, and homeless children – birth to 17 years of age. The Warren County Children's Shelter opened in 1991 in response to public requests that something be done for abused, dependent, neglected, runaway and homeless children.

What We Do...
• The Warren County community has been very supportive of the Shelter, but there is still an urgent need for contributions. Volunteers are always needed to help with crafts and recreational activities as well as grounds and facilities maintenance.
• WCCS participates in the National SAFEPLACE Project and has sites throughout Warren County.
• Oversight and enrichment by the community is facilitated by a local Advisory Board.
• The Shelter is funded by the Warren County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Human Services, the Department of Health and Human Services, United Way of West Central Mississippi and private contributions.
• The Shelter offers a safe, home-like refuge for children in need. The following services are offered for shelter residents:

Individual & group counseling & therapy
Outpatient intervention (Ages 10-17)
Family Preservation
Information, referral & support
Psychological & psychiatric services are available
Medical & dental services are available
Public education programs
Recreational activities, including a swimming pool, games and crafts
Spacious grounds of more than 3 acres allowing outside activities
Children are allowed to stay at the Warren County Children's Shelter for up to 30 days. Runaways are allowed a 14-day stay.

The Shelter can accommodate up to twelve children - infants through 17 years of age.

South Mississippi Children's Center

Who We Are...
South Mississippi Children’s Center is an emergency shelter and diagnostic and evaluation placement resource for abused, neglected, runaway, and homeless youth. The Center is a 12-bed, co-educational emergency and/or temporary placement for children ages 10 to 18 years of age.

The Center is funded through grants from the Mississippi Department of Human Services, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Victims of Crime Act. Donations and contributions are also accepted from local organizations, groups, and individuals. The Center is always in need of contributions and volunteers. Volunteers are needed to be tutors, help with crafts and recreational activities as well as grounds and facility maintenance. The Center is a program of the Mississippi Children’s Home Services.
Oversight and enrichment by the community is facilitated by a local Advisory Board.
The Center has a Youth Volunteer Program comprised of local area youth ages 12 to 18 that make up a Youth Advisory Board that help plan activities and enhance the home-like environment for the Center residents.
The Center was established by the Mississippi Department of Human Services in 1979 as a safe haven for children between the ages of 10 and 12.
In 1982, the Hattiesburg Junior Auxiliary founded and developed the Emergency Girls’ Shelter which has since become South Mississippi Children’s Center. The Hattiesburg Junior Auxiliary continues to support the Center.
