World Vision has been involved in every major disaster in India since 1977, starting with the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the Latur earthquake, the Super Cyclone in Orissa, the Gujarat Earthquake ,the tsunami tragedy, Kashmir Earthquake and many other disasters. In these relief situations World Vision works in close coordination with the government, other NGOs and the communities affected by disasters. Our programmes include emergency assistance, community rehab, psycho-social care, economic recovery and infrastructure. In the recent tsunami World Vision responded within the first six hours to provide cooked food to over 6000 families. By the end of the first three weeks World Vision had provided 45000 families with food, water, blankets, clothes and medicines. World Vision also helped families by building close to 3500 temporary shelters, providing 1600 boats and economic assistance to over 2000 families and houses to 5861 families. World Vision’s response to the floods in two states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is on a swift mode completing distribution of immediate food aid to 1772 families in both areas.
