Parkersburg Needs Your Help!!!

The Iowa State Bar has established a Disaster Legal Services Hotline to provide advice and counsel to the residents of Parkersburg and Butler County who were affected by the storm on 5/25/08. The hotline has been established in support of and assistance to the Butler County Bar Association and it's member attorneys. The Iowa State Bar Association Disaster Legal Services Hotline telephone number is 877-775-8882.

Volunteer attorneys from around Iowa will be scheduled to respond to calls made to the hotline. Once a call is received by the ISBA, it will be routed to 'the attorney on call'. They will respond promptly to the caller's request for assistance. This hotline is being established to provide advice and counsel over the phone and not to provide ongoing legal assistance. The advice hotline is free. Is a caller should need further assistance, they will receive instructions and advice as to how to retain an attorney on their own.

The ISBA anticipates that most of the calls for advice will be in the following areas; (1) insurance claims; (2) landlord/tenant claims; (3) home repair contracts; (4) consumer protection; (5) preservation of legal documents; (6) estate administration; (7) Powers of Attorney; (8) replacement of important documents; (9) FEMA regulations or other issues as requested.

It is anticipated that the hotline will be functioning by Fri. May 30th, 2008. The ISBA will monitor the frequency of calls and evaluate if additional resources are needed.

Today, we are seeking to build a list of volunteers who would be willing to respond to calls, As a volunteer on the hotline, you will be scheduled to a two hour time slot, where you will remain in your office and wait for calls to be routed to you by the ISBA staff. The ISBA staff will answer all hotline calls initially and conduct a brief intake collecting necessary contact information. The caller will then be informed that an Iowa attorney will return their call.
