The programs are designed to alleviate threats to life and property that resulted from recent flooding

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), the West Virginia Conservation Agency and Conservation Districts, are accepting requests for assistance from private landowners to address stream impairments. The programs are designed to alleviate threats to life and property that resulted from the natural disasters such as the flooding that occurred May 9-10.

Emergency assistance to address stream channel obstructions or severely eroding stream banks is available for eligible sites. Interested landowners whose homes, businesses or other improved properties are threatened by severe stream bank erosion or stream channel obstructions may request assistance by contacting the West Virginia Conservation Agency at 1-866-823-5663 (toll free) or 304-957-2994. Applications must be submitted by June 5.

Additionally, residents whose ability to get to work has been hampered or who have lost their jobs due to the flooding may apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) benefits. These funds apply to the severe storms, flooding, mudslides and landslides that occurred beginning May 2, according to Michael Moore, director for Unemployment Compensation Division of the West Virginia Department of Commerce.

Those wishing to file a DUA claim must do so by June 18. The benefits also cover self-employed workers not usually entitled to unemployment insurance, including farmers. Applicants must provide proof of past earnings such as business records or bank statements as well as their most recent income tax forms when applying. These claims can be filed at the Workforce West Virginia offices in Beckley, Logan, Princeton and Welch. For more information, contact the Logan Workforce West Virginia office is (304) 792-7020.

The Mingo County Commission and Office of Emergency Services would also like to inform residents impacted by the flooding that the last day to receive supplies from disaster relief centers will be Friday, May 29. Supplies will still be available by request after that day while they last.
