Mission: Mustard Seed Missions is a Christ-following mission seeking to serve the poor in Haiti. Partnering with Haitian followers of Christ, we jointly work to address the health and living conditions of the Haitian people, leading to self-sustaining improvements. MSM visits Haiti regularly to hold medical clinics in remote rural villages for people who have very limited access to medical care. We work to provide medical care and improve community health, environmental conditions, and education. All of these actions are used to build relationships with Haitians who are actively engaged in this work. In these activities, we attempt to mentor concepts of good stewardship, integrity, leadership, and self-sufficiency wherever possible. MSM is also working with the American University of the Caribbean in Les Cayes, where we have taught seminars and short courses, assisted students with tuition, and given Bible studies.

Mustard Seed just finished mobile medical clinics in Torbeck, Jebwan west of Chantal, and Dubreuille along River L'Acul north of Ducis. We work out of Les Cayes and were quite hampered by flooding. We saw one possible case of cholera, a 10 year old girl, who had already been to the general hospital. Our docs thought it was more likely typhoid. Other than that we saw none and heard about none. We continue to do training and pass out Kolera handouts.

MSPP has been passing out meds for filariosis throughout the whole area. Saw some malaria as we expected to.

Hi Folks,

Quick spot check- are the CTCs handling the patient demand at this point? Are we seeing lower mortality compared to the initial wave? Seeing some traffic on rural mountainous areas seeing issues- what is everyone seeing at this point?

Cheers,
Jim

Market Day in Ducis, Sud

In the SUD, northwest of Les Cayes, there is a regular market day each Tuesday in Ducis. It's easily located on Google earth (W73 52'58.02, N18 13'51.52). It becomes a madhouse that you can't even walk through because there are so many people there from many miles away in the mountains. This would be an ideal place to capture people for education and the need is GREAT! (Read below).

On January 10, 11 and 12 we went up to Caiman (further west and north) and to Platon (further north and west) to provide cholera education. We trained over 20 community leaders that represented 13 different communes; over 150 people were in the audience as we trained the leaders over 3 days. NO ONE had gotten to them with any information at all. They had not seen any of the cholera posters, nor seen or heard any of the cholera information. There were vodou practitioners among our audience as well as people from the evangelical church where we were teaching and the local Roman Catholic church. We went to great lengths to try to dispel the various rumors that have cropped up about cholera. All of the information was eagerly received; the people are hungry for information. We passed out ORS, showed them how to make home-made sewom oral and made some batches so people could even taste it. We left each trained leader with 10 posters and about 125 double-sided kolera handouts (we down-sized the five page handout that was posted here) to go back to their villages and share what they'd learned. Each leader left with a plastic bound teaching folder that they could use again and again. We were thanked over and over again. We didn't run into any resistance because we were blans; we taught, but had a Haitian translator translating everything. We're also known to many of the local people there. This is so much worth doing!! We'll be returning in a week to do mobile medical clinics, but first we'll do more education at each site.

I talked to judy last night. She's leaving for Pestel this morning.

We were in Caiman yesterday where there reports of cholera but we were told the old woman was on her way to the CTC in Leprete. Caiman (Kayiman). N 18 15' 26.97
W 73 56' 50.49. We trained over 100 people there yesterday including 10 leaders who were given thick packets of handouts to take back to their communities and teach. They are really hungry for info and have gotten none.

We are further up in the mountains at Platon and there is no reported or observed kolera here. We're doing teaching here for two days and expect many people will come out of the woodwork once they learn we are here. Platon. N 18 16'21.61 W 73 57'49.83.

MSM runs mobile medical clinics for one week each in Feb., June, and October (gen. 2 days at each site). They are also ready to deploy Jan. 6 pending political situation.
The will be bringing educational materials to distribute
Do not know if area is recieving any educational training presently
Nearest hospital is Les Cays - 3 hrs away by vehicle
Very remote area- some people walk 5 hours to see them when they hold clinic
They typically see 800 pts. in the week long clinic-every 4 months
They bring Culligan water to the clinics. The sites rely on mountain water sources (springs, rivers) and /or roof-collection cisterns (Doti, Platon)
No systematic purification is in place
Supply pick up point would be Les Cayes
HELICOPTER GPS: Lat. 18 16'22.74" N. Long: 73 57'51.00" W.
This landing is at school yard in Platon and is at easterly end of plateau servicing communities to west towards Peak Macaya.

(Platon is a 2 hour truck ride, through a river and an hour hike up the moutain with donkeys northwest of Les Cayes. Pastor Saurel can arrange donkeys)

As of 12/11/10 no cholera in these communities, however Pastor Saurel reports cases in Chantal and Fond Palmiste which are nearby.

Cholera Epidemic – Clean Water Needed
October 28th, 2010

The cholera outbreak occurred shortly before Paul and I left Haiti; by the day we departed (Sunday) it had been declared an epidemic. We’re watching the maps and the news regularly, including online listservs, UN updates, etc. to follow this. We have tickets to return in December, and we are not planning to change our plans at this time. Our December trip is all about clean water and Haiti needs it now more than ever.
