We have had 38 cases that have not been confirmed as cholera but have been treated as such. 24 cases are currently in the hospital some have gone home and some have died, I think 10 or 12 deaths. I spoke with Gyrlene this afternoon, they do have IV fluids and supplies for IV's both adult and peds, and they do have Doxycycline, but she said they would be grateful for more so they are ready as the cases continue to come in. No aid teams will travel there without security, which is scarce. Many of the surviving children will likely need to be transported to field hospitals or other locations where they can be helped further. Update: 9:56pmEST, 20 Jan: Spoke with a contact for the orphanage. They are still awaiting word on aid, but the orphanage hospital, equipped to treat about 35-45 patients, is treating over 150. They still need basic necessities, such as food and water, and do not have proper medical equipment. "It's so hard to get any type of communication down there at this time that it was bad enough news, I guess I just have to sit and wait what further [news] there is." "But nobody could get near the orphanage to check on the children because of the debris and the destruction along the way. Our local hospital, Hôpital Bienfaisance is receiving many wounded. A national congressman was injured and stopped at three major facilities on the way unable to find help. A worker at the orphanage also died and two more are missing, said Frank Chauvin, a member of the Order of Canada and the founder of Le Foyer des Filles de Dieu, for girls aged three to 18, in Port-au-Prince, epicentre of Tuesday's earthquake. "There's at least 67 other girls that are still OK, but I don't know if any of them are injured, or what the conditions of the buildings are," said Chauvin. "It's so hard to get any type of communication down there at this time that it was bad enough news, I guess I just have to sit and wait what further [news] there is." Chauvin heard the news Thursday morning from a woman living in Miami who knew the orphanage's director. "She was able to get through and get the news about the kids," said Chauvin. "But nobody could get near the orphanage to check on the children because of the debris and the destruction along the way. "I guess somebody finally managed to get there [Thursday] morning and we got the news then that we had lost three of my girls," he said. No aid teams will travel there without security, which is scarce. Many of the surviving children will likely need to be transported to field hospitals or other locations where they can be helped further. Update: 9:56pmEST, 20 Jan: Spoke with a contact for the orphanage. They are still awaiting word on aid, but the orphanage hospital, equipped to treat about 35-45 patients, is treating over 150. They still need basic necessities, such as food and water, and do not have proper medical equipment. The orphanage is asking for donations in the form of medicine (Tylenol, antibiotics from doctors, Motrin, anti-diarrhea), bandages and medical supplies, diapers, and baby clothing. The clothing can be used, as long as it is clean.
