These programs allow not only the rapid improvement of living conditions and hygiene of affected populations, but also help to cover their basic needs and to revitalize the economy of living in areas affected by the earthquake. A multisectoral response for 150 000 The survivors have lost everything in the earthquake: families, housing and livelihoods. Today, most of the 4 million people living in areas affected by the earthquake and some 2 million displaced people face severe difficulties in finding enough to eat and to buy basic necessities. After an initial phase of massive food distribution and access to drinking water (still ongoing), teams of ACTED establish a multisectoral humanitarian assistance to cover immediate needs of affected populations, particularly in the districts of Carrefour -sheet, and portal-Leogane Turgeau in Port-au-Prince, but also Leogane Gressier, Grand Goave and Jacmel. ACTED and will help 150 000 victims in these areas of intervention with food distribution, construction and rehabilitation of shelters, activities for access to water and sanitation projects and the recovery management centers. Also aided in the reception areas of the displaced The influx of people leaving the affected areas to the north, mainly in the direction of the Artibonite and Central hosting some 230 000 displaced, is constantly increasing, and spontaneous sites appear around cities least affected. Approximately 1.2 million people now live in spontaneous sites and 467 000 have left Port-au-Prince to the rural areas less affected in the center of the island. After an initial phase of massive food distributions to 250 000 people, ACTED has been helping to 150 000 people with a multisectoral response. Priority: disaster shelter at the approach of the rainy season This week, the dry season, two tropical rain have severely stressed the threat to the million homeless in Haiti. The rainy season should start in just over a month following that hurricane. "There are small rains almost every day. So for us, an urgent issue is to enable families to take shelter in temporary shelters, "said Sebastien Lambroschini, head of the emergency mission ACTED Haiti. People remained in urban areas affected by the earthquake were grouped in 918 spontaneous gatherings where they sleep in makeshift shelters. The priority is to enable victims to shelter weather resistant, with the mass distribution of plastic sheeting, while working to build semi-permanent shelters to meet the needs of victims within 12 months. Second Emergency prevent a health catastrophe After five weeks, the hygiene conditions in the sites are deteriorating day by day. "These sites are scattered around town and around it is difficult to assess their real needs. One thing is sure, if nothing is done, we run the health catastrophe. "Collection of garbage, sewage, construction of latrines ... we must act quickly to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases like cholera. For while most affected have now had access to food aid, sanitation in most combinations are inadequate or nonexistent: only 3500 latrines have been built or are being, then it be 18 000 for single Department of the West (the epicenter of the quake) to prevent deterioration of health of populations already weakened. Faced with this problem, ACTED intends to accelerate the construction of latrines but also launch a program of work against payment for the collection of waste while allowing victims access to a small income. In the coming weeks, at least 4,500 people will work with ACTED to implement the remediation.
