Mission: For more than 40 years, Friends of the Orphans has worked to end the vicious cycle of poverty by giving safe and loving homes and brighter futures to children in Latin America and the Caribbean. We do this through fundraising and volunteer efforts that support Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH, Spanish for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”). Together, we transform the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children by creating families for life through values of unconditional love, shared responsibility and education. This enables children to grow into caring and productive members of their communities. By making a difference in the lives of the children, our supporters’ lives may be enhanced as well.
Friends of the Orphans is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. In addition to our national office located in Illinois, we have six regional offices, each of which has its own volunteer Board of Directors. The members of our boards have diverse professional backgrounds and expertise, but each actively works to raise funds for and awareness of Friends of the Orphans and our mission

FROM THE SITE:
Friends of the Orphans provides financial and volunteer support to Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos/Nos Petits Freres et Soeurs (NPH/NPFS, Spanish and French for “Our Little Brothers and Sisters”), which has orphan homes and outreach programs in nine countries, including Haiti.
As a result of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on January 12, 2010, NPH/NPFS Haiti suffered the tragic loss of staff, volunteers and family members, as well as extensive damage to its facilities.
I already made a donation. How is my gift being used?
I am thinking of donating. How will my gift be used?
Relief funds are being used for medical supplies, food, water, mattresses, tents and other items critical to effectively treat and care for thousands of victims. (Click here for sample costs.) Because of the close proximity of NPH’s home in the Dominican Republic, we have been able to make an immediate impact in Haiti and are continuing to help those in need. Supplies are being purchased by NPH Dominican Republic and transported directly to NPH/NPFS Haiti. Following are the primary areas of assistance. (Click here for detailed statistics.)
• St. Hélène Orphanage for Children, a permanent home for more than 350 children, is caring for an additional 75 children who had been supported while living off-site, but lost their homes in the earthquake. We are committed to helping as many children as possible and are identifying children with no families who can be integrated into St. Hélène’s.
• St. Damien Hospital, the only free pediatric hospital in Haiti, is currently caring for more than 200 children and adults. Roughly 20 surgeries are being performed each day in three operating rooms. A new neo-natal ward is caring for nearly 20 women and babies. Read more . . .
• Kay St. Germaine, adjacent to the hospital, is caring for 30 abandoned children from the Port-au-Prince general hospital until a permanent facility is found. School and physical therapy programs re-opened on February 1 with 18 students and 10 patients. (The whereabouts of many previous students and patients is still unknown.) We anticipate that eventually physical therapy will be offered to people who will be receiving prosthetic limbs. We are also searching for a rental property in Petionville to continue the day program for disabled children that was previously located in the Fr. Wasson Center, which collapsed in the earthquake. Read more . . .
• Four Mobile Clinics are each attending to 70 - 140 patients daily.
Click to watch a CNN report on the Day Camp program.
• A Day Camp for Vulnerable and Displaced Children is currently serving communities on a rotating schedule. Each day, 85-100 children are transported to NPH/NPFS grounds and provided with breakfast, lunch, and educational and recreational activities. They are returned to their families in the afternoon. An off-site camp is serving 85 children per day. The programs are being managed by youths who grew up at the NPH/NPFS Haiti home. Read more . . .
• The NPH/NPFS water truck is making daily deliveries of 36,000 gallons of water, enough for 4,285 families.
• The Francisville bakery is baking and distributing 5,000 rolls per day.

mission:
For more than 40 years, Friends of the Orphans has worked to end the vicious cycle of poverty by giving safe and loving homes and brighter futures to children in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The members of our boards have diverse professional backgrounds and expertise, but each actively works to raise funds for and awareness of Friends of the Orphans and our mission -> For more than 40 years, Friends of the Orphans has worked to end the vicious cycle of poverty by giving safe and loving homes and brighter futures to children in Latin America and the Caribbean. notes: NPFS has three distinct facilities:
* St. Hélène, a permanent home for orphaned and abandoned children
* Kay Père Wasson or The Father Wasson Center, our former pediatric hospital now used for administration, rehabilitation and educational purposes;
* and a pediatric hospital called St. Damien Chateaublond.
St. Hélène is located 5,000 feet above sea level where the trees flourish and the air is cool. Approximately 450 children reside in this refuge, healthy and well fed. Another 175 youths are enrolled in an external program in which they live with family but receive academic scholarships.
The entire facility is located on 15 hillside acres. There are 19 residential cottages: one is for babies and toddlers; another is for children with special needs; and the remaining are for various age groups.
Just outside of the capital in Pétionville (a suburb), is Kay Père Wasson or the Father Wasson Center. This five-story building, formerly known as Hospital Saint Damien, is currently being used for various programs and administration purposes.
Kay Père Wasson houses the accounting offices, a physiotherapy/rehabilitation program for children with developmental disabilities, a job training and development program for ex-pequeños teaching them management skills and it is also used to accommodate visitors.
In December 2006, a state-of-the-art pediatric hospital in Tabarre, named St. Damien Chateaublond, was inaugurated. The hospital’s main focus is on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malnutrition and cancer. This facility provides in-patient care with120 beds and out-patient care for up to 100 children daily. There is also a dental clinic, laboratory, and public health clinic on premises. Adjacent to the hospital is Kay St. Germaine, a 2,300 sq. ft., rehabilitation and physiotherapy center aimed to open in the summer of 2008. These programs reach over 30,000 people annually.
