mission: The first United Way was founded right here in Denver, Colorado by a group of visionaries: a woman and five clergymen who believed there must be a better way to meet the needs of local people. On October 16, 1887, this group created the Charity Organization Society, the first association set up to meet community needs by funding many charities while significantly reducing the number of appeals. It started the United Way model of using organized teams of workers to solicit employees in a variety of different businesses. Over the last 120 years, the combined non profit charity concept known as United Way has undergone many name changes. The movement has been known as the "Community Chest," "Red Feather Drive," "United Fund" and since 1964, "United Way," with more than 1,400 local affiliates nationally. Each is independent, separately incorporated, and governed by local volunteers. Mission: Mile High United Way mobilizes the community to take collective action to create positive, lasting change.
