Hi Jeff,
We are here to help. First step is to get everyone on your end on the HEAS distro. We only wish we could have shared info with you earlier, as we have been forecasting a hit on Cite Soleil for nearly two weeks. The HEAS community is highly resourceful. I will personally ensure we are able to mobilize assistance to you and your team.
Cheers,
Jim

Through PADF's PRODEPUR project, a community development project operating in many areas of Cite Soleil and other neighborhoods of the capital, I can confirm that 5 cases of cholera surfaced on Saturday in Wharf Jeremie, located on the outskirts of Cite Soleil (near the La Saline round point). Though I don't have the diagnostic reports, they exhibited all classic signs, and the 5 cases resulted in death within 3 hours. Our animateurs are currently monitoring the situation to know whether new cases have emerged.
This is obviously an extremely dangerous situation now! In addition to the generally poor living conditions in Cite Soleil which make this area a breeding ground for the rapid spread of this kind of disease, this particular zone is at the heart of the City's transportation hub, where ships leave from the port to the South, buses run out of, and roads run into Delmas, Martissant and Cite Soleil itself. As there are no appropriate health services available in this area, and people have no means to get quickly to St Catherine or the Hopital General, more deaths can be expected unless we come up with a way to localize the spread and treat cases that emerge.
In addition to actively raising awareness through a public information campaign around Cite Soleil, PADF is looking to establish a mobile clinic in the area (perhaps in Simmonds Pele where we've already prioritized a clinic through PRODEPUR). We will be meeting shortly with the Ministry of Public Health to get approval to establish the clinic, and are seeking assistance from any organization that can provide stocks of IV solution, antibiotics, bottled water and cholera cots - as well as health professionals/volunteers that can help establish and run it. We'd obviously like to do this in a coordinated fashion with other organizations working in this domain and in this area of the City.
Please contact me if you can help.
Thanks,
Jeff Kerzner

About PAHO/WHO in Haiti
PAHO/WHO has worked for decades in Haiti. This work was possible thanks to a great collective effort, namely: a permanent presence in the country; strong technical support from regional and global levels; support from PAHO/WHO offices in neighboring countries, especially the Dominican Republic; mobilization of horizontal cooperation and the continued support of national authorities, donor agencies and multilateral cooperation. Another key element was the coordination with other UN agencies and the inter-American system, the Cuban Medical Brigade, NGOs, civil society in Haiti, as well as other bilateral cooperation agencies. This collective effort has made it possible to undertake many activities and concrete actions for the benefit of the country's population. The Millennium Development Goals provide a framework for international assistance and investment in long-term, sustainable solutions for the country. PAHO/WHO encourages a joint approach to Haiti and the Dominican Republic, given the interdependence of their economies and the high migration between the two countries and its impact on the health sector.
PAHO/WHO has focused its activities in Haiti on two main areas: humanitarian assistance and rehabilitation following disasters, and technical cooperation for national health development.

The United Nations Health Cluster, headed by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), began operations on 16 January, helping Haitian health authorities coordinate the international health relief effort, carry out an initial needs evaluation, and map out the capacities and activities of NGOs, governments, and U.N. agencies to ensure that the health response would be optimally effective.
The Cluster is currently facilitating the coordination of more than 400 health partners to support the efforts of the Haitian Government, resulting in targeted post-disaster support to the population through recovery and reconstruction of the country’s health sector. Eight Cluster subgroups are addressing daily needs in the areas of health care and mobile clinics, hospitals and trauma care, health information management, mental health and psychological support, disabilities, medical supplies, early warning of communicable diseases, and reproductive health.
As the rainy season gets underway, hurricane season looms ahead, and settlement camps for the displaced population continue to overflow, new priorities are emerging that require counterbalancing with the resolution of ongoing challenges.
The contents in this site provide an insightful overview of PAHO/WHO’s historical commitment to the Haitian people and offer a critical, evidence-based assessment of the country’s post-earthquake health needs over the short-, medium-, and long-term.
Experts have called the earthquake an opportunity to “build a new and better Haiti” by correcting former inequities and offering genuine hope to those who have suffered social injustices for many generations.
In the aftermath of the earthquake which struck Haiti last 12 January 2010, PAHO/WHO has been very active in providing rapid response to immediate needs. In this sense, through the PAHO/WHO Emergency Operations Center (EOC) it was possible to gather information, organize logistics and coordinate humanitarian aid. Since PAHO/WHO Country Office was partially damaged, the team was relocated to PROMESS premises to remain operational. PROMESS, the Essential Medicines Program managed by PAHO since 1992 is located near the Port au Prince airport and has played a key role in drug supplies and essential medicines distribution.
