Haiti Update:
We have been in touch with all UMVIM teams and they are safe and doing okay.
UMVIM, SEJ received the email below from Rev. Tom Vencuss, Volunteer Management Coordinator in Haiti. Since the election the situation has escalated into demonstrations and violence as seen in news reports:

"Friends, just an update on things. Could you pass this onto those who can disseminate it to DSs or local churches regarding our teams. There are obviously alot of questions and concerns that people in the states have.
First, our teams here are safe. And we have been in touch with all of our teams and they are doing okay. Please see below.
We have heard that all flights in and out have been cancelled through the weekend so we are making plans to hunker down for the next few days. We are in touch with our folks in the field and will apprise of the situation and begin to plan accordingly. We are calling the airlines to see what the options there are for moving people out. So, we'll play that by ear as well. I'll let you know what we come up with.We are also in touch with some of the EMH leaders who are monitoring things for us and keeping us posted on what they hear and know.
Our general plan is to try and get out and bring in our teams from the field. There is a little more traffic on the main street but even if things open up a bit, we'll give it another day. And, we need to hear what places like Carrefour and Leogane look like.
I spoke with Pastor Maude and she said the teams in Petit Goave are safe and okay. I spoke with Ruth Depestre and she said one of the lay members from Mellier is looking after the team to see that they have adequate food, water, etc.. So we are good there.
There are a lot more sirens going on around us, some tear gas was shot off around the streets here, the streets were impassable yesterday, but all in all, at least around here everything was of a non-violent nature. I was out on the streets a number of times and again there was no real violence. I know it is different in other places.
We will also be in touch with the Embassy and I think Ruth has even suggested that someone from the EMH might contact the UN to see if as escort might be available to bring teams in--but again, we'll see how that unfolds." -Tom Vencuss

Haiti Earthquake News
UMVIM iscurrently working in Haiti, following January's earthquake. Read below for information about preparing a team to serve in Haiti.
The work to be done in Haiti will be prioritized in cooperation with the Methodist Church of Haiti in areas affected by the January 12, 2010 earthquake. In general, projects will consist of rubble removal/deconstruction, medical assessments, and vacation bible schools. The schools are closed due to building damage. Building engineers are reviewing building standards for the best possible way to rebuild as needed by the Haitian people.
The goal is to work with the people of Haiti and to help them with their needs.
General team qualifications & guidelines:
1. All UMVIM teams must sign their team up through the US Haiti Calendaring Coordinator. The US calendaring coordinator will determine the location of where teams will work. Even if your team has prior Haiti experience, your assigned location may be different due to changing circumstances and priority needs.
2. All teams will work on projects which are the priority of the Methodist Church of Haiti.
3. Your team leader must have current team leader training.
4. You must have previous experience with the Methodist Church of Haiti.
5. Teams are to consist of no more than 12 members.
6. Teams must purchase accident insurance.
7. Teams will be required to have all immunizations up to date.
8. It is highly recommended that each team have at least one medical person as a part of their team. Some locations will be at least an hour away from hospital care. With more medical persons on a team they can assist in medical assessments in the communities where the teams will be working.
9. Estimated cost of mission is about $50.00 per day plus airfare or about $1500.00 per person. This will include your transportation to Haiti , food, housing and in country transportation.
10. Each team will be expected to raise $ 3,000 in project money. This amount will be matched by UMCOR up to $3000.
11. At this point in time there are only two flights a day into Port au Prince. All teams are required to enter and leave through this city.
