notes: Queensland Flood Appeal - Mon, 10 Jan 11 Queensland Mass Flood Appeal Unusually heavy rainfall in Queensland this December has caused devastating floods that have swarmed over an area the size of France and Germany combined, forcing thousands to evacuate. It has been described as the worst flood in the history of Queensland, with 6 major rivers bursting their banks. At least 22 towns and cities are swamped, leaving over 200,000 people stranded. Officials say the floods will land a big blow to the Australian economy, with costs incurred not only from damages to residential and small business infrastructure, but also from the flooding of major mining and crop harvesting locations. Several major highways are submerged, with up to 40 communities now cut off with floodwaters reaching up to 15 metres in some areas. This isolation has lead to shortages of basic foods, and an increased likelihood of the spread of diseases. The Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, stated earlier: “No donation, whether it be $2 or $20, is too small. Every dollar will be directed towards helping Queenslanders in need...Australians have always rallied to help those in need and I am certain we will rise to the challenge once again.'' Muslim Aid is currently raising funds for this appeal and urgently request the generosity from donors to support our fellow countrymen. We are sending funds directly to the Premier's Flood Appeal (no administration fee).
