Is wildfire really a threat here in central Oregon?

In an average year, central Oregon fire fighting agencies combat 450 lightning and human-caused fires on about 50,000 acres. While the majority of these fires are contained relatively quickly, a handful escape the most gallant efforts and the potential for catastrophic loss is right in our back yards. All of Deschutes County has been declared a Wildfire Hazard Zone. That means any place you live and work here is at substantial risk of wildland fire. A careless cigarette, fireworks, or debris burn can all ignite a brush fire that rapidly overtakes a neighborhood. A few hours of prep time can save your home and valuables.

FireFree is a multi-year educational campaign that addresses the ways to reduce the risk of damage by wildfires in Deschutes County and beyond. The campaign aims to educate the public about wildfire safety and promote behaviors and attitudes that translate into creating defensible space around homes and businesses. Organizers hope to prevent huge losses like those that occurred in the 1996 Skeleton Fire and the 1990 Awbrey Hall Fire.

Spring 2011 FireFree Clean Up Events

FireFree allows residents of Central Oregon the opportunity to recycle yard waste and debris at no charge at area landfills and transfer stations in Deschutes and Jefferson Counties.

The yard debris will be recycled into compost and biomass fuel for clean energy.
