Christchurch (NZ) Earthquake

Caritas is accepting donations towards relief work following the latest devastating quake that hit Christchurch on 22 February. Funds will support the St Vincent de Paul Society and other Church agencies working with people in greatest need. Caritas has pledged $25,000 towards relief and recovery.
We also express our heartfelt condolences and support to the people of Christchurch as they come to terms with the disaster and start restoring their lives.

Caritas does not normally support emergency response within New Zealand. However, given the size and impact of this disaster, we pledge our support to the people of Christchurch, especially those in greatest need.

Supporting the Victims of the New Zealand Earthquake

Our brothers and sisters in New Zealand are in our prayers after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Christchurch yesterday. Government officials have confirmed that at least 75 people are dead and many more are still trapped in the rubble.

Catholic Relief Services is supporting the relief efforts of our sister agency, Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand. Caritas funds will support the St Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Social Services and other agencies to respond to immediate needs, as well as provide long-term recovery and assistance to those affected by this disaster.

Caritas noted that it does not normally respond directly to emergencies within New Zealand, but the scale of the disaster requires an exceptional response, and they will assist agencies facing needs on the ground.
