Mission: WATCH vs. WARNING - KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

A HURRICANE WATCH issued for your part of the coast indicates the possibility that you could experience hurricane conditions within 36 hours. This watch should trigger your family's disaster plan, and protective measures should be initiated, especially those actions that require extra time such as securing a boat, leaving a barrier island, etc.



A HURRICANE WARNING issued for your part of the coast indicates that sustained winds of at least 74 mph are expected within 24 hours or less. Once this warning has been issued, your family should be in the process of completing protective actions and deciding the safest location to be during the storm.



Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings: Take these alerts seriously. Although Tropical Storms have lower wind speeds than hurricanes, they often bring life-threatening flooding and dangerous winds. Take precautions!

A joint report by FEMA, NOAA and the Red Cross on how to prepare for a tropical storm offers plenty of suggestions on getting your home to ready weather a storm, as well as what to set aside in case of an emergency.

The latter suggestions -- applicable to the natural disaster of your choosing -- include fresh water, blankets, sleeping bags, first-aid kits, identification, insurance paperwork, medicines and prescriptions, credit cards and toiletries. But don't forget games, books, and an MP3 player -- with headphones and charger -- and other items that might help pass the time in a worst-case situation.

Basically, take some time to put together a list of all the things you might want and need in an emergency, particularly a natural disaster in which you could be stranded for several days before help arrives.
