Lend A Hand coordinates reliable transportation, labor, housing and meals for volunteers who want to help those who have lost homes or are suffering extraordinary hardship as the result of a disaster. Often one of the most valuable things Lend A Hand volunteers can do is to listen. Victims of disaster need to tell their stories of loss, hardship and recovery to a sympathetic listener. The new friends you make with other volunteers and with those you’re serving are just one of the many benefits of participating on a Lend A Hand work team. Many (but not all) jobs require physical labor. Most volunteers eagerly jump in and take on any job which needs to be done, from demolition and rebuilding to general disaster clean-up. Thank you for you interest in participating in a Lend-A-Hand volunteer disaster relief effort in D'Iberville, Mississippi. Only 40 persons will be scheduled each month on the chartered bus. At the midpoint of the ride to and from Mississippi, we stay overnight in a motel in the Knoxville, Tennessee area. In D’Iberville, we stay in a ‘tent city’ in which all tents are air conditioned and heated. There are hot water showers available but only portable toilets. Meals are in a mess tent. Volunteers are expected to assist in the meal preparation and cleanup. The participation fee for this program is $250 per person. Upon receipt of a completed Application form, the Skills Inventory, and a check for full payment, volunteers are registered on a first come, first served basis. There are no buses scheduled for July and August. Trips resume in September. October 21 - 29, 2006 Twenty seats are guaranteed to the Derry Presbyterian Church. Of the remaining seats, approximately 3 seats are still available. November 11 - 19, 2006 All seats are presently filled. A reserve list will be maintained to provide substitutes for any cancellations. December 9 - 17, 2006 Presently, 35 seats are available. January 6 - 13, 2007 Presently, 20 seats are guaranteed to Elizabethtown College. All other seats are available at this time.
