Serving Mattapan and Hyde Park for over 30 years
Mattapan Community Health Center (MCHC) is a comprehensive health delivery organization that serves individuals from the Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury and Hyde Park neighborhoods of Boston, as well as adjacent Boston suburbs like Brockton, Randolph, and Stoughton. It is the only community health center in Mattapan and Hyde Park.
Established in 1972 as the Avenue Neighborhood Health Center; it was incorporated in 1974 with its current name; click here to see some of the major milestones in our history. MCHC is independently licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Board members represent communities served by the Health Center. The senior leadership and staff are diverse, dedicated, experienced professionals.
MCHC was one of the first health centers in the country to receive federal funding under the Carter Urban Health Initiative; today the federal grant remains a major source of funding to support the Center's health services for the underinsured and underserved populations.
MCHC is committed to its mission of improving the quality of life for residents of Mattapan and surrounding communities by providing comprehensive, accessible, affordable and culturally appropriate community health care services, including primary and preventive health services.
These services are provided from two locations - the primary delivery site at 1425 Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan and a School-Based Health Center at the Hyde Park Education Complex. Our service population is primarily Black/African Americans, including a large percentage of Caribbean Immigrants. More than 7,000 individuals are served annually through 26,000 visits. The Mattapan community has some of the most serious health problems in Boston. MCHC provides a full array of services for all age groups to address health problems. These services include Primary Care, Dental and OB-GYN Services; and Preventive Health Care and Social Services.
In addition, MCHC participates in vitamin D deficiency/insufficency with various entities including Boston University Medical Center. Dermatology and Podiatry Services are on-site specialty services. MCHC has successfully led a collaborative effort through the American Public Health Association to place a vitamin D policy on the national agenda. Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency is a health problem of epidemic proportion across all life cycles and in all populations.
Major Initiatives
MCHC has four major initiatives to increase access and decrease health disparities. They are Capital Expansion Project - an initiative for a new health center facility in Mattapan; Rock the Boat - a fundraising gala (since 1997); Vitamin D Awareness - an initiatieve to enhance primary care and preventive health services; Health Care Revival (since 1997) - a faith-based, data-driven, community outreach initiative that brings the community together to talk about its health. A Community Health Report Card for Mattapan and Hyde Park is distributed at the annual Health Care Revival Meeting that is held on the first Saturday after Labor Day
