Mission: MAF's aim is to produce and distribute medically accurate and culturally sensitive training films and animations to be used in the developing world, focusing on maternal and neonatal health. MAF partners with Grass Roots level NGOs and health oriented organisations in order for the films to reach frontline health workers. The films are also downloadable from the website.

MAF wants to use advances in media and communication technologies to provide culturally sensitive practical medical training, up-to-date focussed information and exchange platforms to address the specific problems of healthcare in the developing world. Our philosophy is based on two Chinese proverbs: “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime” & “A picture is worth a thousand words”.


Our motto could be “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I understand. Involve me and I remember”.

We want to:

- Produce comprehensive training and teaching materials culturally and practically adapted to different developing countries. These will address the wide range of needs from doctors and nurses to midwives and traditional birth attendants.

- Distribute materials. Given the significant growth in landline and mobile telephones, many developing countries now have access to information using computers or mobile phones. We envisage electronic distribution of our medical information and teaching tools to the most remote communities, via health based organisations, NGOs and charities using mobile phones, ipods and other portable technologies.

- Make materials widely available. MAF’s web platform, built by Captive Minds Media Group, is a crucial part of the strategy. The high quality and practical information for anybody operating in the medical field in developing countries will be centralised and archived here.

I would like to let you know that Medical Aid Films has completed a film on how to care for a newborn in a low resource setting. The primary intended audiences of this film are communities and birth attendants.

The film teaches the key steps to follow immediately after the delivery of a newborn in case it could not take place at a health centre. It insists on the importance of drying the baby and of early
breastfeeding and teaches the correct way of cutting the cord in order to avoid infection. It also teaches what to do when a newborn is not breathing, including putting the baby's head in the neutral position and performing mouth-to-mouth

We also produced two shorter versions of the films focussing respectively on routine care of a newborn and on what to do when a newborn is not breathing.

All three films, which are currently in English, encourage the immediate referral of the newborn to a health centre. Users of the film will be able to choose the video most suitable for the education
programme they run.
