Tell the Public What Counties Do
County governments play a critical role in the governmental structure by providing services directly to the American people. But this important role does not guarantee that people know what counties do.

NACo is working with county officials, the state associations of counties and other groups to raise awareness and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of counties. National County Government Month is an annual program that seeks to raise awareness. Other initiatives are being developed to increase understanding and highlight the successful programs that counties carry out.

A county is considered coastal if it meets one of the following two criteria:

at least 15 percent of its total land area is located within the nation's coastal watershed or
a portion of the entire county accounts for at least 15 percent of a coastal cataloging unit (an individual drainage basin).
