A Flood of Faith: Recovery in the Aftermath
Your community needs your church’s help!
The flood water is a memory, but the trauma and disruption are still with us.
Normally, when a disaster strikes a region in most parts of the country local community churches would already have banded together with civic and government agencies to respond to the needs. So far State and Federal agencies are still hoping for that response from the ecumenical and interfaith community.
I suspect we are unique in that we are not used to disasters in our region. Yet, this one has already had more people seeking relief and resources than any other disaster to hit our region in anyone’s memory. It’s also old news. The poorest and most vulnerable in our population are the hardest hit, but the people registering for assistance cross the spectrum of socioeconomics.

I suspect that without a history of disasters we don’t have a memory of best or worst practices. We also don’t have ongoing agency connections and relationships to facilitate smooth response with our churches. That leaves us without much experience in the long term work of recovery. That coupled with our region’s famous sense of self reliance and independence (read autonomy) adds to the difficulty of bringing help where it is needed through local community efforts. (“What’s the big deal…it’s just a little water in the basement.”)
Currently, 29,500 households have asked for assistance in recovery. Only a small fraction are getting the information they need to follow the proper protocols to get the support, even with all the PSAs, recovery and resource centers,news reports and coaching. And the crucial May 28th deadline for one of the steps in the assistance process is looming. Additionally, in the not too distant future, some of the first responders from the Federal and State agencies will be pulling back. Normally, it is the churches and interfaith community that would be in place to take on the long term recovery work within their community. But that hasn’t happened yet.
Our informational flyer advertises a training and coordination event to help local communities organize to bring services to people who have been affected with flood. Please be sure that someone from your church comes to this event.
